by Haifa Carina

Starting this year’s DevCon Mobile Camp Series highlights the Android platform!

Developers Connect (DevCon) Philippines in partnership with Globe Labs hosted DevCon Mobile Camp: Android on a Saturday afternoon of March 16, 2013 at Globe Corporate Showroom in Makati.

The camp started with a short introduction to DevCon by Terence Ponce, DevCon VP for Programs followed by Anne Michelle Santos who shared about the background and opportunities of Globe Labs.

Charo Nuguid, the Android trainer of the camp, first showed the trends in Mobile development especially in Android. Then the workshop proper began.

Charo briefed the participants on the essentials needed to understand before dwelling on the development proper. Then the participants were taught the step-by-step process of developing a simple Android app. From adding elements to linking functions.

At the last hour of the camp was a contest where the first 5 people who could create a simple calculator Android app (addition and subtraction are the only requirements) would win Android stuffed toy and a Google Developers Group – Philippines drawstring bag. Winners in order were Noel Anonas, John Aldrich Quan, Angelyn Mercado, John Bibal III and Ken Daganio.

DevCon Mobile Camp: Android is a partnership event of DevCon and Globe Labs with Deltek Systems as Gold Sponsor and Freelancer., as Prize Sponsor.

To the camp participants, thank you for making the camp alive and fun! We hope you continue to pursue and improve this skill as this will make you a rare asset in the Philippine IT industry. Big thanks to Charo Nuguid for sharing her valuable expertise in Android development. Special thanks to Michelle Santos of Globe Labs whose support and enthusiasm for the camp goes beyond the clouds! And to the DevCon team, who’s heart of volunteerism for a better IT community continue to live. Kudos to all!
